Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when a pair of track officials ran across the track right in his path

The dangerous situation took place on the third circuit when safety workers were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to change his compromised front wing

Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"

"I came out on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals sprinting across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"

Security Issues Highlighted

"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track track officials can be allowed to just dash across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"

Official Investigation Underway

F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is actively examining the events

"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was advised that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the governing body

"On lap three, track officials were informed and made ready to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy officials were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was raised in that area"
